# BRANY (Biomedical Research Alliance of New York)

> BRANY is a research support organization serving academic medical centers, hospitals, health systems and investigators in the United States. It provides Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) review services and outsourced clinical trial administration. BRANY IRB has been accredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) since 2006.

## Terminology used across this site

- IRB: Institutional Review Board. A committee that reviews and oversees research involving human subjects to protect their rights, safety and welfare.
- sIRB: single IRB. One IRB of record serving all participating sites in a multi-site study, as required by the NIH single IRB policy and the revised Common Rule.
- Central IRB: an IRB of record used by multiple institutions in place of each institution running its own local review.
- Independent IRB: an IRB operated outside of any single institution, used by sites that do not have, or choose not to use, an internal IRB.
- IBC: Institutional Biosafety Committee. A committee that reviews research involving recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules and other biohazardous materials.
- SBER: Social, Behavioral and Educational Research.
- AAHRPP: Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, the accrediting body for human research protection programs.
- CIP: Certified IRB Professional, a credential for IRB staff and administrators.
- GCP: Good Clinical Practice, the international quality standard for designing, conducting and reporting clinical trials (ICH E6).
- MCA: Medicare Coverage Analysis, also called coverage analysis.
- NCD: National Coverage Determination, a nationwide Medicare coverage policy.
- LCD: Local Coverage Determination, a Medicare coverage policy issued by a regional Medicare Administrative Contractor.
