Human Rights Commitment

The Biomedical Research Alliance of New York (BRANY) is committed to respecting and supporting internationally recognized human rights in all aspects of its operations and services. As an organization that supports ethical oversight and advancement of biomedical and social-behavioral research, BRANY recognizes its responsibility to promote respect for human dignity, equity, and the welfare of individuals and communities affected by research.

BRANY’s commitment is informed by the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs),  U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Laws, The Fair Labor Standards Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and American with Disabilities Act and reflects its responsibility to respect human rights, avoid causing or contributing to adverse impacts, and address such impacts should they occur.

Our Commitments

  • Respect the dignity, autonomy, and rights of human research participants
  • Support the protection of vulnerable individuals and populations
  • Promote equity, diversity, and non-discrimination
  • Safeguard privacy and confidentiality of personal and sensitive information
  • Foster ethical research oversight and accountability
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive workplace

Human Rights Due Diligence

BRANY applies a proportionate, risk-based human rights due diligence approach aligned with its role as a research oversight and support organization. This includes identifying and assessing salient human rights risks, integrating safeguards into ethics review and governance processes, and supporting accessible mechanisms to raise concerns without fear of retaliation.

Accountability

BRANY leadership oversees implementation of this commitment and periodically reviews its practices to ensure alignment with evolving legal requirements, ethical standards, and stakeholder expectations.
